There is an option implicit in bohm's advice (which is a good starting point) and that is to attempt to open your MIL's eyes to the fallacy of the Watchtower. It is most probably a longshot, but it's another avenue of approach worth considering, and maybe in the end the two of you can agree to respect one another's path in life and agree to live and let live. The body of evidence that the WTS is not what it represents itself to be is formidable. The difficulty is getting the devoted Witness to open her eyes and mind sufficiently to see the truth about The Truth. Dedicate a good bit of time to researching the jwfacts.com website and use this board to get answers to the specific questions that arise as your knowledge of the WTS improves. This is also a good place to query approaches you should and should not take to improve the chances you will actually be able to start and sustain a civil conversation with your MIL. If this is what you decide to do you will need to take your time and be patient.

Advice for a non-witness dealing with a fiance's witness family
by JAG913 inmy name is jaime and i'm here because my fiance recommended this site.
i am not, nor will i ever be, a jehovah's witness.
i strongly believe it is a cult, but i also am respectful of the choice people make to associate themselves within the witness "world.

How can I support your search for the truth about The Truth?
by Lion Cask inif you are an active but curious jehovah's witness, this question is to you.
comments from others welcome.. i have an image of you in my mind.
i see you secluded in your room with the door closed, speakers off or on low so you can hear the footsteps of anyone approaching, and you are quietly venturing into forbidden places.

So a man walks into a Kingdom Hall for the first time...
by sabastious in...he's wearing sloppy casual clothing, comes in after the song and prayer.
he sits down in the backrow and puts his feat up on the row ahead of him.
he looks very relaxed and starts to intently listen to the public talk.. people start looking back at him, wondering how he could be so brazen.

I had to scroll back up to the top to make sure this was a Jokes & Humor thread. Maybe we need a Jokes & Humor & Irony thread.

What is happening to JWN ?...So many topics not relating to Jehovah's Witnesses!
by koolaid-man innote the home page..wow how it has changed.. jehovah's witness discussion forumthe place to discuss anything relating to jehovah's witnesses and the watchtower bible and tract society... or just make new friends!.
many of the posts have nothing to do with with jehovah's witnesses and new ones coming on this board would be turned off by the content of many of these off color posts.
foul inappropriate language which is not proper or suitable for exiting witnesses to visibly inspect.

koolaid-man, you seem like a Roberts Rules of Order kind of guy. Am I right? Communities change, that's just the way it is. Stick around and it will be different again. Real world. So, relax, enjoy the dynamic, and you won't get crapped on so much.

I have to kinda disagree with that somewhat.
I can accept that. I've read only a sampling of older posts discussing strictly Watchtower issues so I am not getting a complete picture of how it was in here 10 years ago. Maybe the observation should be that people were more respectful while in certain kinds of threads? Maybe I just need to read more old threads.

Thanks for the feedback so far. This is an interesting site, indeed. Much like a community populated by distinct personalities, like in the real world, and the vernacular is just like the real world, too. I spent my whole working life in high production environments and I personally don't have a big problem with hearing rough language or with confrontation, but I am learning to appreciate from being in here that not everyone is as comfortable. I joined this board because I want to learn enough to convince my wife to leave the WTS and I am grateful for how much my understanding of the WTS and how it enslaves thought has improved. My understanding of the makeup of people on this board is also improved.
I've been going back in time and reading some of the oldests posts and it's clear the general tone of conversation was more respectful than it is now, although the conversation now is broadened more beyond just the WTS and that to me is a good thing. I don't think I'd take anything away from this place but I just don't want it to be me who stumbles you while you're still looking at things from the inside out.

If you are an active but curious Jehovah's Witness, this question is to you. Comments from others welcome.
I have an image of you in my mind. I see you secluded in your room with the door closed, speakers off or on low so you can hear the footsteps of anyone approaching, and you are quietly venturing into forbidden places. Maybe this is the first time and your heart is beating so hard you're wondering if someone might hear it. Or maybe you've done this so many times it's not a big deal anymore, but you still keep the door closed just in case. Maybe you join in the conversation once in awhile, or maybe you're a lurker who would like to say something but just don't want to take the risk. More likely than not your activity is entirely secret; you are the only one on earth who knows about it and to be found out would be like having all your clothing ripped off in the middle of Times Square or Picadilly Circus, only worse. You still go door to door, attend the Kingdom Hall, assemblies and memorials and for all intents and purposes are a Jehovah's Witness in good standing. But it's a pretty safe bet you suspect there's something wrong within the WTS. You may already be able to articulate it to yourself or you maybe just have this feeling in the pit of your stomach that won't go away. I think there's something wrong, too.
I don't propose to teach you anything. If this is a learning process then I am more a student than a teacher. I've learned some things that I will help to disseminate but I am by no means even fractionally as knowledgeable as are others in here. If I, personally, have potential to influence you it is only by way of how I conduct myself. If you are becoming a seeker, I don't want to be one of the people whose language and attitude causes you to retrench and abandon your search for the truth about The Truth.

Do You Hate The Jehovah's Witness Religion?
by minimus ini see some here who seem to despise the religion.
others seem to feel that witnesses are wacky but they don't hate them.. do you hate this religion?.

Statements have to be backed up here..Is it the truth or simply an insult?..
Nothing in Farkels statement was false..Farkel made a truthful observation..
The ability to Speak Truthfully is alive and well,on JWN..
I am starting to get the point, OUTLAW. I had almost forgotten how magic and numerology factor into the Watchtower religion. If ever there was a clear indication that the WTS is whacky, it is being well demonstrated here.
OBVES, I am incredulous you've been a member of this community for nine years, because I do not detect a whole lot of support for your perspectives. It must be a challenge taking all that abuse and coming back for more, but then again could it be you chalk it up to being persecuted as a Jehovah's Witness and expect it will improve your scorecard somehow? (serious question, no sarcasm intended).

You're welcome, PSacramento, but all the work was done by others. I just cut and pasted with a little editorializing.
